Latest Bathroom Tile Designs - Trends in Tiles

Copper, Hardwood, Glass, Stainless - what's the connection?

Quite simply, these are some of the latest trends in bathroom tile designs! Want to make your bathroom the hippest one on the block? Feel like you're a do-it-yourselfer with a flair for the latest designs? Find out what today's coolest designers are saying about the use of these materials in your bathroom tile choices.

Metal Bathroom Tile Designs

Metals like stainless steal, brushed copper, and satin bronze are coming on strong in the race for the trendiest bathroom remodeling materials. The old days of using huge sheets of stainless or copper are out and now we're seeing the use of small tile squares of the same material being put together in very interesting patterns. With the new choices in form factors it's making it easier to choose metal as an accent pattern instead of having to use it for a whole wall.

Most often we're seeing metal bathroom tile designs in the backsplash area. If you're going for a traditional and timeless look, stick with bronze and copper as they have a nice antique feel. On the other hand if you are looking for a contemporary and polished look, there's no better choice than top quality stainless steel.

Glass Bathroom Tile Designs

Glass tiles have been around for a long time but they used to be quite expensive. Now with the multitude of glass tile manufactures these days, prices have come down and selection has gone through the roof. Now instead of simply tiling your backsplash we are seeing whole walls or shower stalls done quite elegantly with glass. There is a level of luxury that only glass can achieve. While it used to be reserved only for the fancy hotels and restaurants, now it's becoming the latest in tile design trends in modern homes.

Glass comes in so many finishes from glossy to flat and the color spectrum is endless. Sometimes the most challenging part of integrating glass tiles into your bathroom tile design is settling on a style from all the choices available.

Also, let's not forget that glass is probably the "greenest" material available since it can come from 100% recycled materials. Those people in the remodeling industry are always looking for ways to reuse old material and make it a fascinating part of your new decor.

Hardwood Bathroom Tile Designs

In some old houses we used to see shower stalls and bathtubs surrounded by beautiful wood. While it looks amazing, it's not very practical for the moist bathroom air. With new porcelain tile manufactured to look like hardwood, you can have that look again in an easy to install, clean, and maintain tile.

Glass Bathroom Vessel Sinks - Bathroom Design Trends for 2011-2012

Glass bathroom vessel sinks took the kitchen and bath design world by storm when they came onto the design scene in the past decade. But vessels, a free-standing sink that sets on the countertop rather than in the countertop, are based on the freestanding wash basins from centuries back before running water.

Today, vessels are not only adding a splash off whimsy in bathrooms and powder rooms, but they are branching into styles all their own. In particular, the trend for the upcoming year is glass bathroom sinks to create a focal point.

Match No More

Traditionally, bathroom fixtures were matched in color, style and material. The latest trend in bathroom design has thrown these rules out and we've seen glass bathroom vessels making an appearance in many master baths, particularly in those with the spa-retreat style that has become trendy in the past year.

Functional Art

Interior design has always been about combining function and style, and vessels have taken this to a new level. Art glass bathroom sinks in particular are in vogue for the upcoming year, especially for powder rooms and guest baths.

With the vessel up and off the bathroom countertop, a more sleek, streamlined style is opening up counter space. Look for a more minimalist style in bathroom furnishings to follow this trend.

Shaping Style

Glass bathroom sinks are going to be looking to new shapes and sizes in the upcoming designs. Look for large, square and unusually shaped vessel sinks to add a whole new dimension to this design phenomenon.

Fascinating Focal Points

With the sink or vanity area the focal point of a bathroom, glass vessel sinks step up to the plate in adding a whole new dimension to this area. In the past we've seen fancy bathroom vanities functioning as the focal point, but the trend is pointing towards a more understated elegance in vanities and a showier sinks taking front and center stage. Expect to see more neutral and deeper tones in bathrooms with the vessel sinks adding color and contrast.

Bathroom Design - Decorative Colors to Choose

When a homeowner is considering renovating their bathroom, their greatest fear is probably the notion that the renovated bathroom will soon fall out of style due to an inappropriate or overly enthusiastic color scheme applied to the finish materials, the wall paint, and the choice of fixture colors. One need only look at the leftover bathrooms from the 1970s to see outdated color schemes - wild, gaudy (almost painful to the eye) colors abound and such bathrooms quickly become the laughingstock of guests and visitors. What is the best way to avoid becoming "out of fashion" so quickly?

To put it bluntly, architectural and interior design styles will always change and there is no credible way to ensure a bathroom will persistently remain in style as the decades pass. Even the most tastefully-designed 1950s bathroom (as it may have been seen then) would be unappealing to most people today because our cultural sensibilities have changed. To add another layer of worry, there also is the phenomenon of styles goingin and out of fashion - a design scheme may prove particularly popular one decade, go out of fashion in the next, just to see a return in popularity in the third following decade.

The homeowner is now no doubt wondering what the best means are to avoid constant renovations as styles change. Here are some tips to keep in mind that will ensure your bathroom can be easily and modestly modified to adapt to changing styles:

Simple white fixtures tend to remain in style the longest. Black, green, marbleized, mauve, and other tinted fixtures go in and out of style, but popular taste always returns most reliably to the simple elegance of white fixtures. (Has there ever been a time when white fixtures were resounding "out of fashion?")
Rather than choosing complex color schemes for finish materials and paint, consider using simple neutral colors for these items and adding colors with removable objects instead - towels, curtains, screens, lampshades, rugs, and prints can all be coordinated to represent a specific color or design scheme and can all be easily changed out and replaced when trends change.
